The Review:

Ever since Fish’s debut album, “Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors“, he‘s had an amazing solo career. I will admit that after his second album, Internal Exile I did lose interest with his music. Then in 1997, I heard Sunsets On Empire and I still was lukewarm about the output of Fish so I wrote him off as an artist I was interested in. I just felt his music was lacking something. It wasn’t until 2008, that I had changed my mind. I heard Fish was releasing a new album and I felt a bit apprehensive about it. I was so glad I was wrong.

His new album, 13th Star had everything his debut had emotion and music wise but obviously in a more modernized fashion.. With 10 songs, all ranging from 4 to 6 minutes done in a modern sometimes heavy approach, Fish was exorcizing some ghosts. The attitude of the album is of a bitter nature being it comes after his break-up with Heather Findlay of Mostly Autumn.

While the album has a abrasive feel musically, almost cold and mechanical, it works to his advantage I think. I found each song, just as the debut, to be welcomed by my ears each time I spun the album. I consider 13th Star to be one of the best things to come out in 2008. If you felt abandoned or a similar feeling by Fish in recent years as I did, 13th Star will win you back without any doubt. I would recommend 13th Star highly.
