The Review:
- MoonJune Records' latest release is by an Indonesia band called simakDialog. The album is Patahan which means faults. The label compares their sound to that of Pat Metheny. I‘m not familiar with Pat‘s music to agree or disagree but one thing I do hear is their take on jazz music. I hear some slight world music as well. The album contains five extended compositions performed at a concert in Jakarta. You can barely tell it’s a live recording with the audience responses at a low volume.
From my limited exposure to the jazz genre, I view the music of simakDialog as a meld of western and Indonesia. A mix of jazz and world music into something quite unique to my ears. I’d recommend this band to music fans that want something more than has been created in the past. Each time I listen to Patahan, I hear new sounds, which is always a good sign of a great album.
