The Review:

Redemption is a progressive metal band that was formed in Los Angeles in 2000 by guitarist Nick van Dyk. Since then they had some line-up changes including Ray Alder of Fates Warning, who serves as the current vocalist (as of this review). The band has released three albums, Redemption (2003), The Fullness Of Time (2005) and The Origins Of Ruin (2007) In October 2007, they were asked to play at the 8th annual Prog Power show in Atlanta, Georgia. The result is a DVD/CD live document called Frozen In the Moment, which was released in early 2009 by the band’s current label Inside Out/SPV. Rounding off the current line-up are Bernie Versailles (guitars), Sean Andrews (bass), Greg Hosharian (keyboards) and Chris Quirarte (drum).

Upon watching this DVD, I’m glad to have been able to witness the band in a live setting. As for the music, I’d describe them as a blending of Fates Warning and Dream Theater, yet having it‘s own identity. The set contains 9 songs with the highlight, for me at least, is the nearly 15 minute “Sapphire”, which was the reason for them being asked to play at ProgPower. It’s chock full of extras including behind the scenes footage. This is a perfect document of a progressive metal band that stays true to the progressive side as well as the metal side. If you’re a fan of melodic progressive metal that has some bite to it, then this DVD/CD set will be a perfect introduction.
