The Review:

Hailing from South Pasadena, Mario Martin Zelaya sent me his latest acoustic guitar CD, Calafia’s Moods. It’s acoustic based and reminds me a little of both California Guitar Trio and Guitar Garden. Styles range from a Latin-influenced guitar work on “Cabrillo Beach” and a cover of Steely Dan’s “Do It Again.”. He even samples dolphin sounds in ”Valcamonica”. Not many acoustic player would dream of sampling.

Mario style of acoustic music borders on various styles as Latin, progressive, singer-songwriter and even folk. He even sites Pete Townshend's performance at Amnesty International's Secret Policeman's Ball as an inspiration. His playing also has a quality that adds some quirky guitar moments, not usually associated with acoustic based music.

His second recording, "Calafia's Moods," is something special, I think that should be enjoyed by more especially those into a more artist side of music. Musically it ranges from vocal/guitar sound to a full band. Mario is one of those artists that seems to be under the radar in the progressive rock community, not sure why since he caters to that style oh so well. Check out his MySpace page for song samples to hear for yourself.
